Michael Beasley and John Lucas: Both Nearly Done in Houston

John Lucas has been much-discussed lately as a key figure in the Houston-based, collective bargaining agreement-mandated drug rehabilitation of Miami Heat forward Michael Beasley. Lucas, the former NBA player and coach, and current trainer and counselor, was just named a Clippers assistant coach. So, you might be wondering: If Lucas is off in Los Angeles getting himself a new job, who's watching over Michael Beasley's inpatient rehab?

Friday Bullets

  • Yesterday I blogged a little about Kobe Bryant. To the many Bryant fans who reached out convinced that I had been excessively negative: Ask fans of any celebrity ... if the people "going after" your hero are using evidence-based analysis and a measured tone, there is nothing to worry about. My mild criticism (blended with a ton of praise!) fell far short of people on the Laker payroll like Phil Jackson and Tex Winter have said in print. What I wrote may not make you happy, but it's par for the course. Not everything said about every international media superstar is positive, and that's OK. That doesn't mean anyone's out to get you.
  • On the other hand ... there is an undeniable joy in a well-written negative review.

Spain Gets Off the Schneid

After sleepwalking through the preliminary and qualifying rounds, Spain showed up to the knockout stage of Eurobasket '09 with a fury. The Painted Area has the full story of the Spaniards' win over France and Serbia's mild upset of Russia: Pau Gasol: 28 and 9 for Spain (Janek Skarzynski/AFP/Getty Image

  • Tom Knott of The Washington Times: "Judging from his selective trip down memory lane with Mike Jones of The Washington Times, Gilbert Arenas has returned to his old, mercurial, otherworldly self. As it turns out, he holds the organization accountable for his protracted stay on the shelf. He says he needed to be protected from himself, if not bound in the parachute he was training with two summers ago, and ordered to stop overdoing it. But he says no one in the organization had the inclination to do so, perhaps because of a need to sell tickets, and so he became a victim. That could be one version of the truth. It could be equally true that Arenas was going into the opt-out year of his contract and the organization was looking to keep him happy.

Kobe Bryant's Best All-Time Dunks

That's what the video is called, and it is, of course, majestic. The first two are amazing. The dunk 1:43 in, in the open court, is worth watching again and again. The dunk 1:15 into the video, on an alley-oop pass from Brian Shaw, against the Sixers, is one of my favorite dunks ever, by anybody. But allow me a moment to also totally miss the point of the whole video. Yes, it's perfect, as a snapshot of athletic and creative greatness. But I know I wasn't the only one who was struck by all the open big men in this short video. The pattern plays itself out three times in just ten dunks. In the third highlight, 20 seconds in, we see Bryant beat his man on the perimeter. Tim Duncan shuffles over to help, leaving Shaquille O'Neal wide open under the hoop.

Russia's Richest Man, A Cash-Strapped NBA Team

Reuters has been reporting on the possibility that billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov might infuse the Nets with the capital they need to become a presence in Brooklyn. A spokesman for Prokhorov's Onexim investment vehicle confirmed on Thursday it had been approached to participate in building the Nets' long-awaited arena in Brooklyn and was preparing an offer. A spokesman for the Nets had no immediate comment, while officials with the National Basketball Association could not be reached. The Nets are owned by developer Bruce Ratner. Prokhorov is considering issuing a bond worth $700 million through Onexim to help fund the project, one source close to the deal said. Is it real? Is the NBA really about to welcome an "oligarch" into the ownership club?

Thursday Bullets

  • A suggestion, via Twitter, that a Bryon Russell vs. Michael Jordan match may be in the works.
  • LeBron James is coming to New York ... to promote the movie "More Than a Game." A Nike press release about the visit (taking place this Sunday), makes clear it will be another opportunity for James to demonstrate his lack of steadfast commitment to Ohio. One line that caught my eye: "As part of the celebration, James will be presented with an exclusive pair of Nike Air Max LeBron VII's featuring a New York City-inspired design created by local artist Tomokazu Matsuyama."
  • Imagining replacement refs.
  • I once read an interview with some celebrity, can't remember which one.

Clash of the EuroTitans

Eurobasket is really heating up. In a few hours France -- the undefeated team starring the remarkable Tony Parker -- will meet Spain, which is everyone's presumed favorite in this game and the tournament.  The Painted Area's Jay Aych writes: After sleepwalking through the start of the tourney, Spain has turned up the heat the last two games, looking like the España we expected, while the undefeated French squad has been steady from the start, buoyed by its exceptional defense. Spain underachieved for the first four games and only earned the #4 seed, so France has to face them two rounds earlier than they would have liked. For Spain, it's a role reversal from the 2004 Olympics, when they went 5-0 in group play but had to play a talented but underachieving Team USA in the quarterfinals and lost.

  • Dan Duggan of the Boston Herald: "After averaging 16.9 points, 9.7 rebounds and 9.8 assists in the Celtics two playoff series, it would be understandable for Rajon Rondo to be looking back on that performance as a springboard heading into this season. But as he spoke yesterday at the opening of a Boost Mobile store in Mattapan, it was clear Rondo's focus is centered on Oct. 27, when the Celts open the 2009-10 season in Cleveland against the Cavaliers. 'I just want to get the season started,' Rondo said. 'What I did last year is behind. It's a whole new season. Stats start over, everything starts over. The record is 0-0 so I'm ready to start.' The past few months have been quiet after Rondo's offseason got off to a tumultuous start, beginning with rumors of a trade to the Detroit Pistons.
